It was a song that sounded like it was written for Live Aid, but actually long predated the show. Despite their experience, there were plenty of good reasons for that. For a packed bill at a charity concert with a single stage, you can multiply that concern several times over. And despite their incredible veteran status, bands as big as Led Zeppelin a nd The Who floundered in those conditions — though both were admittedly out-of-practice and not working with their long-standing drummers who had passed away. Thirteen satellites beamed a live television broadcast of the event to more than one billion viewers in 110 countries. More than 40 of these nations held telethons for African famine relief during the broadcast. A memorable performance of the concert was by Queen, particularly frontman Freddie Mercury, who unexpectedly stole the show with a fierce performance. With the group losing steam as they went into the early 1980s after a career of multiple hits, they offered the crowd an unforgettable 20-minute performance.
On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative happened in other countries, such as Australia and Germany. It was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time: an estimated global audience of 1. Geldof then set his sights on staging a huge concert to raise further funds.
The idea to stage a charity concert to raise more funds for Ethiopia originally came from Boy George, the lead singer of Culture Club. George was so overcome by the occasion he told Geldof that they should consider organising a concert. It would be great for Duran to play three or four numbers at Wembley and then flick to Madison Square where Springsteen would be playing.

It made us look like loonies. I told him that was all right if he knows the numbers. I thought that was really a joke. If I could have walked off, I would have. I turned up and I was a square peg in a round hole. But Collins was just the beginning of the bad. Go ahead. Watch and remember.
