Extremely knowledgeable about the history of his profession, Stuart is also a great protector and preserver of the heritage of country music. His mother, a huge fan of country music, borrowed his middle name from Marty Robbins He started playing guitar, mandolin, and other instruments as a very young child, around age five. By the time he was 12, he was playing mandolin professionally with the Sullivan Family, a bluegrass-gospel group that toured throughout the South. After Flatt died in 1979, Stuart worked as a session musician, playing on the records of several country, pop, and rock acts. Although the marriage ended in 1988, he remained good friends with the Cash family. In 1994, Stuart began his television career by hosting the first of a series of Marty Party specials. Smith, who was 17 years older than Stuart, had long been one of his musical idols.
He taught himself how to play the mandolin. While other kids just wanted to play outside, Stuart was inside listening to the music of Flatt and Scruggs and Johnny Cash on the radio. Marty Stuart performed with the Sullivans on the weekends and during the summer. The Sullivans were a family gospel group from Alabama. On one of their trips Stuart ran into Roland White again, and White offered him to join them one weekend. Flatt offered Stuart a full-time job in the band Mattioli.
And thereby hangs a tale. It was triumphant—another diamond-studded performance that brought the packed Smothers Theatre audience to our feet. Marty Stuart is a true folk troubadour in carrying the torch not just for his own music but for the best that has been thought and said and sung.
Chris Scruggs Earl Scruggs grandson played both electric and standup bass, and did an awesome solo instrumental on pedal steel guitar—once the defining sound of country music in the days of Hank Williams—but never played with the pure genius of Chris Scruggs Boogie—an unbelievable display of musical virtuosity. And guess what—the sound was superlative throughout—thanks to the Fabulous Superlatives touring sound engineer—the fifth member of their band, Mick Conley. He had a band T-shirt on and was mixing the show at the back of the hall—a big burly guy with a full beard and twinkling eyes. I thanked him for a wonderful concert as we exited the auditorium. It was a sparkling gem.
As a solo artist, Stuart began making bluegrass-oriented indie records in 1978, but he went down a more contemporary, rock-informed country path when he began recording for Columbia in 1985. Over the years, Stuart has racked up a crowded shelf of Grammys and other honours, becoming a country institution while remaining a maverick at heart.
