The crowd had to wait for a little bit after 9:00 for the main event to go on, but at least we were treated to some killer tunes from Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and Deep Purple. It makes you think that King Diamond is some old geezer that has to be wheeled out and propped up to perform. That was the farthest thing from the case in Anaheim. The stage was masterfully decorated to look like a mental institution. Complete with a wire bed frame to the top left of the stage, an iron door with a small window, and all the accouterments of evil with a three level stage design. As he slowly rises from the gurney, the rest of the band emerged from the back and went right into the song. That also, was not the case. He did have Livia Zita, singing backup vocals with him. This helped to smooth over some of the notes, but he was his own great self singing. He and the rest of the band knocked this section of the concert out of the park. Finishing up this part of the story for Abigail and Jonathan until later in the night. It was supplemented with a dancer under the voodoo spell of King Diamond. For me, this was the highlight of the night.

King Diamond was back! As a lifetime worshipper of the mighty King Diamond, I was ecstatic when finding out that he would perform Abigail in its entirety. News that a concert would be filmed in my hometown sweetened the deal. I immediately bought tickets and endured the countdown until November. The Fillmore was a brand new venue in Philadelphia.
My initial impression was that it was too NICE for a metal show. Comfortable lounges with leather couches allowed patrons to sprawl out and gaze at high-tech LED screens. The venue is miles apart from the dive clubs that nurtured the original metal scene. Play vintage, under-represented songs and you will please the hardcore fan base. After Exodus, I retreated upstairs to enjoy the fancy leather couches. Moments before King Diamond appeared I returned to the dance floor. My jaw dropped. The venue had filled to capacity during my short reprieve.
The excitable young quintet inject just enough punkish energy into their set to not make them sound too serious; a red floor light and fake smoke jet are used to brilliant effect. Opening up this kind of bill is no laughing matter, but Idle Hands are up to the task, and walk away having hard-won dozens of new fans. The place is considerably more packed when Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats start up; while the seated areas begin to fill, the front pit section is full to the back barriers. For their part, the Cambridge stoner metallers rip through their more rock-oriented tracks, losing some of their sleazy edge in the process.
No DVD. Then 2018 faded away. Given the setbacks and inactivity of the previous decade, one wondered what was happening behind the scenes. Would the DVD ever be finished? My assumption was the project had been abandoned. Setlists from both shows are identical. The only value here is presenting King Diamond in different settings. Philadelphia is clearly the better show. Metal Blade has presented the concert in a variety of formats. Fans willing to forgo the visual element may opt for a double live LP on colored vinyl. The three-disc package may be the best way to own the live rendition of Abigail. King Diamond is currently working on new music. Precedent suggests that we will be waiting a very long time.
