Notes: Animals In Beligum was supposed to be the silver pressed debut of the February 20th, 1977 show at the Sportspaleis in Antwerp, Belgium. Unfortunately, Godfather made the common error is pressing the February 22nd show at the Pavillion de Paris, France. Godfather sounds very good and is an excellent edition of the show. This tape circulated as Antwerp for many years. Despite the error, this is a very good release by Godfather. The sound is much better than Funhouse and is highly recommended.
Rob Phillips who did some cow-bell, supplied guitar and vocals at times and added some cymbals to his repertoire on this one. I have seen quite a few albums performed by CAL and Animals twice now….
Rick Wakeman is still releasing epic orchestral keyboard pieces like The Red Planet and could be even reimagining his Yes material. With Nick Mason focussing on everything pre-Dark Side and any likelihood now of the remaining three Floyds recording together being less likely than setting the controls to the heart of the sun, we should be thankful their peers have released this stunning epic. And what a brilliant job they do too. Graham Bonnet, vocalist on Pigs , replicates the angst and bitterness of troubled Roger Waters and hidden away in Sheep are the early Floyd interstellar keyboard swirls.

On the first day, there was no need for the marksman who had been hired to shoot down the pig if it escaped its mooring ropes, but it took so long to inflate the pig that the photographers could only capture the building, in front of dramatic clouds. Finally on the third day, Algie was retrieved, repaired and lashed to the towers but the sky was less dramatic, so the final cover was a composite of Day 3 pig and Day 1 location. It was also on the tour that an incident occurred which was to have a major consequence. On July 6th, the last night of the tour, at the Montreal Stade du Parc Olympique, the 78,000-strong crowd was so rowdy — screaming, yelling and letting off fireworks — that in sheer frustration Roger Waters ended up spitting at a fan.

What is suggested by the word? We knew that the music and lyrics were fueled and characterized by anger, so was it an angry animal? A dull thought. What came to mind was a child, a three- or four-year-old boy, accidentally witnessing his parents having sex. Does he see it as a loving, though passionate, act or as a violent act? Does it excite, confuse, or traumatize him? Are they suddenly animals in his eyes and no longer his loving parents? The Floyd rejected the idea. The moody sky was full of billowing clouds that made for a dramatic backdrop, which Hipgnosis cofounder Aubrey Powell captured on film. The pig was attached to the ground by a cable. Sharpshooters were positioned to take it down should the pig break free from its moorings. But the pig malfunctioned and never took flight. So the shoot was rescheduled for another day. The Higpnosis crew returned the next day for Take Two, but Higpnosis had forgotten to ask the police sharpshooters to come back. Big mistake. This time around, the pig successfully took flight. The cable had snapped in a fierce gust of wind and the Pig drifted up and away into the flight path to Heathrow airport. It finally disappeared from view at 30,000 feet. Flights were canceled. RAF fighter pilots were dispatched to find the pig. But because it was made out of plastic, it was undetectable by radar. That night Hipgnosis received a call from an irate Kent farmer who complained that a large pink pig was in his field frightening the cows. The pig was retrieved amid heavy press coverage that created unplanned PR for the album. Hipgnosis tried a third time with sharpshooters reinstated and succeeded. But the image of the pig floating in the sky was a disappointment.
At 6 PM, Daniel estimated 30 000 people were inside already but the band is obviously not going to play until 8 PM comes around. What do they do? They get rowdy and they drink beer. Above Many people thought this was a spectacular entrance by one of the band members! More rowdiness followed until the show actually started … Daniel also remembers Roger freaking out after a firework that pretty much everyone heard in the Stadium! Remember, this is the first big concert at the Stadium and the security DOES NOT really know how to handle big events of this type: People sneak in glass bottles, recorders, etc. Some people leave during the Blues number That Pink Floyd played to try to calm the crowd but most of the crowd stayed to see the band do the Blues number while roadies get the equipment out apparently Nick Mason was HILARIOUS since at the end he basically had nothing but his seat and one of his drums. Overall, the show itself was not bad but the crowd was too much. The party continued on the streets later on. This next set of pictures were taken before the show in the morning.

While seeing art reflected in the real world is no crime, the rush to treat art as the key to understanding — and perhaps even changing — politics can result in short-sighted thinking. Released in January 1977, the album puts society under the microscope and dissects the ugliness and brutality of human nature. The record came at a time of huge social unrest in England: class tensions were on the rise, unemployment was skyrocketing and racial divide had hit a high-water mark. Anger was in the air and it bled into every corner of Animals. Lyrically speaking, this record holds some of the most unyielding, sardonic and iconoclastic poetry that Waters has ever penned.
In Chicago, the band played to an estimated audience of 95,000; in Cleveland and Montreal , they set attendance records for those venues by playing to about 80,000 people. Augmenting the band were sax player Dick Parry who occasionally played keyboards out of view of the audience and guitarist Snowy White , who also played bass on "Sheep", "Pigs Three Different Ones " and "Welcome to the Machine". At some venues, paper sheep and pigs designed by Tim Hunkin were fired over the audience and parachuted back to earth. This was the first time "Welcome to the Machine" and "Wish You Were Here" were played live, with the latter being played differently than the studio album. It featured an extended guitar solo, a reprise of the second verse and Richard Wright closing the song with a piano solo.

Animals Reimagined: A Tribute to Pink Floyd

The album continues the long form compositions that made up their previous works, including Wish You Were Here 1975. The album received positive reviews from critics and was commercially successful, reaching No. Animals is both a progressive rock album and a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain, and was a change from the style of their earlier work.
Tension within the band during production culminated in keyboardist Richard Wright being fired two years later.
Touching pieces as they are, they are the icing on the cake to what is a fantastic concept; the world may be descending into madness, but if we all showed a little love and care for our fellow man, such an austere perspective of capitalism would not be needed. Nonetheless, its relevance has hardly subsided. The Iraq War, the recent global economic crisis, and the misdeeds of the Bush administration and their Western counterparts are crudely analogous to the conditions which created Animals. History has already proven to us that socialism cannot work; self interest is in our very nature, and hence naturally we are inclined towards a capitalist system where we have the opportunity to better our situation.
It is my personal belief that Animals was not written as a precursor to the beginnings of a socialist revolution; it does, however, have a message aimed at the stark belief in the purely capitalist society, where minimalist government intervention leads to the oppression of the proletariat. This said belief maintains that capitalism merely reflects human nature, and this may be so, but this does not effectively justify the transgressions so vividly outlined in the album. A musical masterpiece, a literary work of genius, and a political tour de force, this album delves so deeply into the human psyche that it will leave you stunned. As an album, Animals is easily worth the mounds of hyperbolic claim that I give it; a piece of genius, and a genius that will never die.
