The Arctic Monkeys entered the final week of their 2014 North American winter tour with something to prove. The Domino Records recording artists and Sheffield rockers have been heros in their native England for nearly a decade, but they have never been embraced in the United States as one of the truly elite rock bands. This was truly the moment when everything changed. It might be hard for some to imagine what that would sound like, but if you hear the music it makes perfect sense.
A music comparison that kept running through my mind was Arctic Monkeys to Nirvana. His songs are dark, post-punk anthems with pop sensibilities and memorable hooks.
We were later informed these set pieces were, indeed, the exact same furnishings that decorated the Ann Arbor living room where Vulfpeck first started some 10 years ago, having been shipped in that very day at least according to Theo Katzman. Illuminating the band from behind was a neon Vulf logo, their signature font glowing triumphantly over the Garden stage. His signature head-piece microphone was equipped and ready. Once the overhead lights went down, a simplified strobe rig and thunderous speakers was all the trio needed visually, as they eschewed jumbotrons in order to mimic grimy warehouse sets, just on a massive scale. Their tastes blended into one overarching sound as they passed off control of the boards to each other, echoing the community spirit that so often overtakes the crowds at dance shows.

With more than 18,000 seats, it took awhile, but seeing the sea of trance fans put into perspective just how popular Armin here in the Big Apple. A giant white ball appeared out of the darkness, like a primordial sun, Armin in front of it like a phoenix with his arms outstretched. Three hours in, I found myself crying — literally tears filled my eyes as the audience threw their hands up toward the sky and let the music fill themselves. Armin was an incredible showman — we felt every beat, every soaring melody, and as singers and musicians crowded the stage I realized how much work he must have put into every note of the production.
