Just the look of the cover makes me quiver with excitement. I loved this as a teenager and have continued to love it for over thirty years. Of course those displays of explicid virtuosism would soon become common place even if many of artists did not have the talent nor the technique to pull that off. But at the time it caused quite a stir, since in the minds of many heavy music was something done by below average musicians, who would try to hide their lack of musical skills under a wall of noise. Deep Purple changed all that. Yes, they were LOUD. There was also a great singer in that, under the moniker of Ian Gillan.
Wow, the man had a great voice to match the incredible instrumentation around him. He was one of the first to show he could not only scream but also sing very well Robert Plant never got even close to him live. And they were on their peak at the time. Even the obligatory drum solo is interesting and not just a self indulgent exercise like many even if I do not see that as a highlight here. Made In Japan is made only of classic stuff.
It was very well recorded for the time and the new CD version has 3 extra tracks I guess it was the encore part : Black Night, Speed King and a powerhouse version of Lucille.

The filming is much, much better, in color, and the camera shows what it needs to show. Unfortunately, it is edited for time, and the songs are truncated. I recall seeing this on the "In Concert" television program back in the Seventies. Really this would only be of interest to fans of Deep Purple, and although it has major faults, I suppose we are lucky that there is any footage at all surviving to this day.

Everybody goes utterly and completely nuts, especially Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord, who have always been the virtuosic stars of the band. Blackmore, egocentric as he is, grabs all the attention he can with his famous Fender Stratocaster, playing every riff and solo a dozen times better than on the original studio releases. Blackmore gets such a tremendous amount of energy out of his guitar. As many may not be aware of, Deep Purple, and especially this classic line-up, was having trouble with internal struggles between the band members, something especially Blackmore contributed to he was not good at getting along with people. Believe it or not, this only made their live performances better and better. Blackmore and Lord can be heard rivalling constantly throughout the album, countering each other riffs and solos with brilliant intensity. Gillan, being the vocalist, wanted his share of attention too, and the intensity of his work only profits from the continuing rivalry between the two greatest egos in the band. After a while Blackmore starts toying around with his guitar. The notes he plays are mimicked by Gillan vocally, something he pulls off well because of the incredible range he easily commanded at the time. The duel becomes more and more powerful, and reaches its climax when Blackmore breaks down and Gillan comes in with a very high-pitched, almost ear-splitting scream. His other prime moment is obviously Child in Time, which became so famous for its vocals in the first place.

It starts with a belting, full-throttle version of Highway Star and quickly moves into the definitive version of Child In Time, my all-time favourite Deep Purple song. If you think the In Rock version is good, you need to hear it live in 1972. The studio album versions of the songs are used as the base for each song but they move into extended instrumental jams where Purple show other groups how to put together a live performance. Hard, fast and heavy but always coming back to the tune like great jazz players. Here is Strange Kind Of Woman for you to enjoy. Here is a version of Child In Time from 1970 rather than 1972.
